Exercise
Exercise is a general term used to describe everyday activities like walking, housework, gardening, washing the car, or climbing the stairs. It also includes more structured exercise like going to the gym, aerobic classes, dancing, swimming, cycling and playing sport.
How much exercise do I need?
Any exercise is good, but experts recommend that you build up to 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days. ‘Moderate’ is equivalent to brisk walking. You should get slightly breathless (but still able to talk) and a little hot and sweaty to achieve the health benefits.
You can get the same benefit from three ten-minute sessions.
The importance of exercise
An active lifestyle improves your health in many ways. It helps you:
• Keep your weight within the healthy range
• Lose weight (if you need to)
• Maintain a healthy heart by lowering blood pressure and increasing HDL ‘good’ cholesterol
• Increase bone and muscle strength, keeping you supple
• Reduce the chance of developing Type 2 diabetes.
It also helps to:
• Give you more energy
• Reduce your stress levels
• Let you relax more easily and sleep better
• Increase your self-confidence and self-image
• Lift your mood
The more active you are, the more benefits you will reap!
